Its been through lots of rocks, lots of mud, deep water, crashing down trees, you name it. It is extremely hard to shift into any gear, almost feels like the auto clutch isn't engaging. It will shift but you really have to jam it into gear. In 2007 they started making the 2 models with different gearshift shafts/spindles. Apparently the new ES gearshift spindle is not attached to the back engine cover, but the Foot Shift is (just like both models pre 2007). Turns out that if the shift motor stops in between gears (could be because the angle sensor shut it off coming down the ramp) everything locks in place. Simple fix is to remove the shift motor. I recently picked up a 2007 Rancher 420 that was having the typical ES shifting problem seen so often. The problem where it wouldn't even shift. I've gotten that sorted out by going through the wiring harness connections and cleaning them up and adding a little dielectric grease. I also changed the angle sensor just because it was cheap. 38589 posts · Joined 2010. #2 · Aug 30, 2015. welcome to the forums. changing a es model to a manual shift is not as easy as what your thinking !. you will need the front engine case cover, manual shifting shaft ( this means you have to split the motor ! ). wire harness, ecu/c.d.i. and a few other odds and in's . soooooooo, before you start ...On a Honda Rancher 420, the angle sensor is located on the left side of the ATV on your engine compartment, right down near where your left foot rests on the footwell. Depending on the year of your ATV, it may also be located more centrally on the engine compartment, just beneath the seat and beside the shift motor.

I noticed a huge improvement in shift quality after changing over to the Shell 5W-40 synthethic. The motorcycle community swears by this oil.If you do replace you need to replace the gear behind it for about $15.00.
